In 2000 a group of Millersville University (MU) Cheerleaders wanted to go to the NCA Nationals in Myrtle Beach
for the 2001 competition season.
At that time the University team was without a coach able to take them. After a short amount of time the
team decided to not attend nationals as Millersville University but to form an Open All star team, Cheer
Excel was born. The team pooled it's resources and contacted as many cheerleaders as they could muster. The
first team was made up of those current MU Students, MU alumni and even a few cheerleaders from other programs and schools.
At that time the team voted and selected Matt Null, a Millersville Alum and friend, as their coach. The
coaching philosophy agreed upon by the team was that the squad was coached by Matt but was run by the team.
Seven years later Cheer Excel is stronger then ever.
Cheer Excel is in it's 9th competition season. Over 150 cheerleaders have worn the black silver and white
uniform. The team has moved from practicing 2 times a week in Lancaster to one time a week at the
incredible Paramount Sports Complex located
outside of Hershey, PA. The team has competed in more
then 25 national level competitions and has performed in many local exhibitions at local High |
Schoolsand colleges
in Lancaster, Elizabethtown, Reading, Dauphin and Philadelphia. At this time the team has 2 national
titles from the 2006 Competition Season.
The team itself has grown from a primarily Lancaster based crew to a squad from all over Pennsylvania and further!
The current team is made of cheerleaders from Millersville, Shippensburg, East Strasburg, Hazelton, Penn
State Main Campus, Harrisburg, Kutztown, Adamstown, Lancaster, Washington DC and Philadelphia.
Despite the addition of new cheerleaders to the team every year, the fundamental, traditional values of the team still
run as strong as ever. Cheer Excel takes pride in being role models for younger cheerleaders to look up to. Cheer Excel
itself is still an independent program not associated or tied with any other programs or teams, although we have made many
friends throughout the industry. The members of the team work hard to support the squad as a whole as they divvy up the
work loads of fund raising, travel arrangements, and other tasks that are needed to make Cheer Excel function. 2008's
Competition squad will be coached once again by Matt Null, 3 of the original 2001 year squad members as well as
others will help to run the team a in a democratic fashion. We all Look Forward to another wonderful year as a Cheer "Excel-er"
